surgin,
Sounds like they took the 13 loop from Greenland to Twin Lakes. That was a nice run as I indicated in my post. Hope they had fun. South/South-West of Mass City was horrible, well except for 13 west of Norwich Road to Bergland which was pretty decent.

Hope you rotator cuff heals fast and for sure so you are ready for next season.

We were thinking about heading up this weekend again but trailer up from the house in Wakefield to Houghton and ride in the keweenaw but it sounds like it got realy warm up there too.

Need to find out info on trail conditions.

I haven't taken odometer readings yet on the machines to see how this season racked up but I'm thinking it will by shy of 2K.

Pantera

 Pantera

we were up there Sat.. and feared the trails you took, so trailered up to Mass city... I can't ride thanks to what the deer did to my rotator cuff, so I dropped three sleds and three friends at trail head of Bill Nichols and told them I would meet them at twin lakes in an hour..(38 miles).. they showed up 2.4 hours later!!!
They said there were no bare spots and they had a great time and hit no deer!!

drove the sleds and trailer there via ewen and bruce crossing and that section of 8, and 3 from them up to rockland is also looking real bad...

good year, 2000 + miles on my Z1 and the boys at Northwoods arctic cat in hurley got it repaired in less that two weeks and they even preserved my trail and state stickers and numbers... thanks guys...

 03/07/10 09:00am

Ride Report from yesterdays run of 200 miles with the kids: Keep in mind it was close to 50 degrees out!!

Wakefield to the Tula Tracks (M28) on 8: Very thin with places you HAD to drive across wet, sloppy dirt.
Tula Tracks(M28) to Bergland on 8: Also very thin but able to weave back & forth around the bare spots.
Around Bergland on 1 & 8 thin on west side better once into it but wet & sloppy.
Bergland to Rockland on #13:
Pretty decent up to Norwich Road where the GRTA turns around.
East of Norwich road: Rough & Rougher, obviously not groomed as recent as West of Norwich Road. This is Superior Snowmobile Clubs stretch and is usually in poorer condition.
Coming into Rockland: Poor, poor & horrible. Snirt, dirt, mud & water. Do not got this way if you value your sled. This area is done for the season unless the temps drop & they get significant snow.
Rockland to Mass City on #3: Poor, rough, sloppy & rough. Not groomed in a long time. East of #12 intersection was better but not by much.
Mass City to Twin Lakes on #13: Good, plenty of snow although it was wet & slushy in places. A fun ride and a real treat after what we just went through.
Twin Lakes back to Greenland on the #13 loop: Very nice, plenty of snow, not much traffic and snirt only in some corners.
Greenland to Onotonagon on #12: Also very good and we wasted no time getting there.
Ontonagon to White Pine on #12: Also very nice and also cruised right along. West of the 101 intersection was significantly worse but only because East of there was beautiful. Still ok but had to slow down quite a bit.
White Pine to Bergland on #1 was fine too. Cruised right along as things were refreezing and we wanted to get back home.
Bergland back to Wakefield: Same as in the morning but a little worse of course due to the warm temps throughout the day.

My recomendations: Ride North/East of Mass City, around Ontonagon etc. South Boundary, aka #11 should be fine too.

Pantera

 3/5/10

Ishpeming, MI Snowmobiling Update

Sorry about the late report this week, I have been having some computer problems. On to the report: The weather has warmed and melted some snow and softened the trails. Roads and High traffic areas are gonna be bare or rough. Trails are still very rideable, just need to exercise some caution. Get out and ride! this may be your last chance for the year.

Note: The Moose Country Snowmobile club now has a groomer parked on site in the Country Village so our spur is always the first to be groomed when they go out. So you can literally see the groomer leaving the garage to go groom the trails on a daily basis.

Weather
The weather has been warmer the last week and has melted some snow & softened up the trails.

Conditions
Fair to Good Overall. Surgin,
Did you hit the deer East or West of where 13 goes South off of #2? We had 2 DNR officers at the intersection of where 13 goes North from #2 and was wondering after hearing about your incident if they were down there for that. But I seem to recall some sleds also sitting by where #13 comes up from the south when we came up from WI. I was leading a group of Vintage machines on my '79 Eltigre Cross Country race sled.

We too are planning on coming up this weekend with the family but not liking the forecast.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I like to drive fast too, when conditions allow and I certainly don't want speed limits like MN has, 50 mph, day or night. Doesn't allow you to ride like you should be able to.

There is a lot of snow up there so lets hope the warm up doesn't totally ruin it up there.

Pantera

Snowmobile Trail Conditions as of March 1, 2010

Last Friday’s snow amounted to about 3" on the Northern Trails, and about 2" on the Southern trails. The Northern trail was groomed on Friday, and things turned out well.

The Southern trail remains ungroomed, and there are no plans to grooming those trails without an 8” snowstorm. All Mackinac Bridge crossers are advised to take the Western loop or trail #473 to get out of St. Ignace. You should be able to get through OK, but it won't be anywhere near perfect - especially in town, which has not been groomed at all this year. Right now, plans are to groom the Northern and West connector trails on Thursday or Friday, and they will probably sit there for the weekend. Additional grooming will depend on any snow that we get - if any.

The forecast for this week, should just barely maintain what snow we have, and then we will loose some this coming weekend. The last weather report showed a warm up, and maybe rain on Saturday.

Information provided by the Straits Area Snowmobile Club.

 03/01/10

Due to the high volume of traffic on the trails we ran logging roads on Saturday. Lots of snow and nobody in our way. Did a little over 100 miles.

Forgot to mention on friday we found 3 sleds out of gas that didn't make it down from South boundary to Bergland. We had 2-5 gal cans on-board for the long day so we gassed them up and sent them on their way.

Later up 13 towards Rockland we found a guy stuck turning around to help his buddys out and gave him a little assistance. He was buried right next to the edge of the trail.

Might head back up this weekend with the kids for another run...

pantera

 02/27/10 08:00am

Trail Report:
We ran from Wakefield to Houghton/Hancock and back for about a 250 mile run.

The trails in the morning were decent, plenty of traffic on them from their last grooming, but not bad. Thoughout the day in into the evening we came upon several groomers so while we didn't have any problems since we weren't trying to break the sound barrier, some of the clowns out there better keep that in mind so they don't crash into them and take the groomer out for the rest of us.

On that same note: PASSING AROUND CORNERS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!! Some idiots pulled that on us and after 1 got thru we made sure for our safety and theirs that the rest had to wait until the trail straightened out and we pulled over to allow them to pass. We just about had one of our group pushed off the trail from that idiot maneuver.

Again, I feel like I am shouting down a well because those idiots probably don't read this board or even know how to read but I will say it again to at least let the people know that do read this to watch out for these idiots.

Pantera

Snowmobile Trail Conditions as of February 25, 2010

EVERYTHING we have is total ice. Some trails have a bit of broken, processed ice on top of the trail ice base, but there is not much, and it isn't very good.

The decent trails are: Caffey from Rexton in, most of the Burma Grade, most of the RR Grade from Trout Lake to the Burma Grade / Iron Bridge area, and most of the Cedarville connector - on our side.

The rest of the trails - the majority of them have various problems, ranging from sand on the trail surface on the pipeline section of #473 to long total gravel sections on the RR Grade from St. Ignace to Moran. There are some gravel problems, and major ice problems on the Carp River TT, heading North out of Brevort, and even the Cut River trail has some problem areas, and water holes.

We have a total stoppage on grooming until further notice. We need AT LEAST 4-6" to get things back to ridable in the Southern Areas, and MAY BE able to get away with 3-4" in the Northern Areas. The groomers will not be run in the mud and gravel, and we need to get some decent snow Friday if we have any chance of getting things back in shape. The forecast is anywhere from 1" to 5" of snow, so who knows what we are going to get. Next week is not looking good for snow; in fact it may warm up and start melting a bit again. The sun is higher now for sure, and we need to get another workable base up to get any riding in. This information will be updated if we get a decent amount of snow.

Information provided by the Straits Area Snowmobile Club.

 surgin,
sorry to hear about the deer, oooouuuch.... We were near there last week but didn't hear anything about it. We were on a run for the Snowmobile Hall of Fame, the 'Ride with the Champs' on Vintage machines, Code named 'Vintage Challenge". We ran all the way from St. Germain, WI to the Fish Tales on Lake Gogebic for lunch, 2nd year of the run and we made it both times. Ran a 1979 El Tigre 6000 Cross Country edition race sled. We too saw lots of deer, 4- legged and motorized, lots of Deere boys on the run, i towed 3 of them out of the woods.

We are heading up this weekend, tonight actually, so it sounds like they just got some fresh snow so conditions should be awesome!!

Later,
Pantera

Keyboard was locked so we couldn't call anyone using recent calls to get a clue as to who's it was but with the S/N we were able to trace it back to the owner & I sent it to him in Indiana, i think. 2/15/10

Ishpeming, MI Snowmobiling Update

The snow is falling!

We have gotten several new inches of snow and have a snow advisory for tonight for lots more snow. The trails just continue to improve and are in excellent shape pretty much throughout the area. The groomers continue to work hard to keep the trails flat and riders are reporting great rides.

Note: One thing i forgot to mention is the Moose Country Snowmobile club now has a groomer parked on site in the Country Village so our spur is always the first to be groomed when they go out. So you can literally see the groomer leaving to go do the trails from our parking lot!

Weather
Cold weather and lots of snow coming down. Should be more snow throughout the week.

Conditions
Excellent Overall. For up to the minute conditions please call toll free 866-875-4312 and ask.

Helpful Links

Conditions: http://www.countryvillageresort.com/html/snowmobile_conditions.html

Lodging: http://www.countryvillageresort.com/html/lodging.html

Specials: http://www.countryvillageresort.com/html/snowmo_specials.html

Webcam: http://www.countryvillageresort.com/html/webcam.html

Any questions can be directed to me at cvmarketing@charterinternet.com

Thanks!

Hey everyone i know this is a far fetched idea, although i figured i would come here in hopes that some one may have found a camera. We had stopped at a location just north of Bessemer and my camera had fallen out of my pocket upon leaving. Unfortunately i was not aware of this until ways down the trail. It was a silver olympus stylus. If anyone has found this and or knows some one that did would you email me with info please? Fahey37@gmail.com and i do have money that i could send your way.

Snowmobile Trail Conditions as of February 12, 2010

Groomers did not run all week, and will both run tonight to pack down that 1" or so we got on Monday/Tuesday. That snow brightened up the trails, and they actually look pretty decent for the amount of snow on them.

Just as before, all the trails have a decent ice base, with between 1” and 4" on them - even the RR Grade. There are still two bad, but passable sections of trail. There is still the problem with the pipeline section of 473 out of St. Ignace; for about 1 mile, you will have to ride to the side. And there are two 100-yard sections of the RR Grade between Castle Rock Rd, and Moran that are down to gravel in the middle of the trail. St. Ignace out is OK.

Information provided by the Straits Area Snowmobile Club.

As Promised, made it up here Saturday Feb 5th….
Not as much new snow as the weather was indicating, much was lost during rainy weekend… but once again the groomers have done an incredible job… Bessemer to Wakefield and then 11 south all the way into WI was smooth and pristine. WI trails were as I remember them over a decade ago. Too many driveways, too many signs to resorts, and too many people coming the other way. Had to wait for a dogsled race to pass to get from land=o=lakes back into MI on 3. Very bumpy all the way to Watersmeet, then 2 West to to 13 N was pretty smooth. (Cops were checking stickers there.) 13 N and 100 to Lake Gogebic had icy corners and a few dirt spots on the logging roads. To avoid the risky corners we hopped on the lake and took a straight route to hoop and holler for gas and refreshments. 8 and 2 back to Bessemer were holding up pretty well, some ice in the corners but not as bad as by the lake. Overall, not bad for a Saturday, and still prefer MI trails to those in WI, but with sticker on the hood will try a few more times this season.

surgin

 FROM THE CADILLAC WINTER PROMOTIONS
Thursday–February 4, 2010

All 4 of the groomers are running their regular and extra routes Thursday through Sunday to keep the trails in as good as shape as possible. The trails remain at about a 8 on a scale of 1-10. The RR grades have some bare spots (wind blew the snow off) but they are short and only a few of them. The tight, twisty sections in the woods are thin but snow covered. The wide open forest and seasonal roads are smooth, snow covered ice and flat. ALL trails are very rideable and will not damage the sleds. Use extreme caution this weekend due to all of the ice (there were at least 3 accidents last weekend) and all of families and large groups that will be on the trails Friday-Sunday.

The route from Lake Mitchell’s west end to Pole Road (Hemlock Park) is CLOSED. The suggested routes out of the Cadillac "West" area is to follow the trail along M-115 south east to 44Rd and then the White Pine Trail south, OR go west along M-55, (follow the trail signs), cross M-55 at the Gas Station and follow the signs along Pole Road and 27 Rd to the start of the groomed trail. The 2nd route is through a residential area: Go Slow and RESPECT PRIVATE PROPERTY.

Snow gauge*: 4 inches
