Dear Business Owner or Snowmobiling Enthusiast,

It won’t be long and winter will be upon us. TASA has been preparing for the approaching snowmobile season since the close of last season. Many people don’t realize there is more to what TASA does than just groom the trails. There are more operating expenses involved for TASA than just covering the fuel costs and paying the groomer operators.

With that said, we all know that the economy is in bad condition and the fuel costs have prevented many people from taking vacations this summer. We also understand that even though TASA worked hard last winter to provide excellent trails, with the amount of snow there was downstate not as many people traveled to the area to have their winter fun. However, the lack of snowmobilers did not lessen the expenses of TASA.

And we all know the cost of fuel keeps going up as does the cost of heating. These are all expenses that TASA has to account for to the State and then wait for reimbursement from the State. Last year the State reimbursed at $4.61 per mile which barely covers what the actual cost of fuel is. Cuts most likely will need to be made some places within the TASA organization (and other grooming organizations). The biggest cut that can be made is to groom less days per week and sad to say, it MAY come to that.

Now more than ever, the Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association needs your support. We hope you will take the time to complete the membership form and contribute what you comfortably can. Your dues will assist in maintaining excellent trails and all the other related expenses that is involved.

As within any organization, volunteers are needed. It has been the same people doing the same thing for many years. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.

The almanac's 2009 edition, which goes on sale Tuesday, says at least two-thirds of the country can expect colder-than-average temperatures this winter, with only the Far West and Southeast in line for near-normal readings.

''This is going to be catastrophic for millions of people,'' said almanac editor Peter Geiger.

The almanac predicts above-normal snowfall for the Great Lakes and Midwest, especially during January and February, and above-normal precipitation for the Southwest in December and for the Southeast in January and February. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions will likely have an unusually wet or snowy February, the almanac said.

Amendment to the TASA Bylaws
will be voted on January 6, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the
TASA groomer barn. The amendment is to add
3 director positions. The director positions are in addition to the 5 existing board members.

(The addition of 3 directors is recently mandated by Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth Bureau of Commercial Services. This is being required of various organizations.)

After this change is written into the bylaws, then there will be notice of when the election for three directors will take place. 6 inches to 10 inches on the ground, no base yet IT IS FINALLY DECEMBER 1ST! AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS, RIGHT?? It means if you haven't eaten or frozen all that left over turkey, ya better just throw it out! Nah, YOU know what it means! The official start to the snowmobile season!!! While we do have snow on the ground, there is no talk of grooming yet. The daytime temp yesterday reached 41. This a.m. it is 31. But, if White Precipitus, Mother Nature and Old Man Winter all join forces, it could be a great season! The price of fuel is "affordable" so make your reservations to come on up!

Muzzle loading season for our zone is December 5 to sundown December 14th. IF there is snow enough to groom north of the private property that north # 9 crosses, then TASA will groom that. We cannot groom private property until after muzzle loading season unless the land owners "get lucky" and get their deer and open the gates to us.

Groomer Dan and Groomer Stan will be heading North on # 9 each driving a groomer. We are taking two groomers on this trail because we feel that there could be trees and limbs that need to be taken care of and it is much easier and safer if there are two operators to attend to this. Due to muzzle loading season, we will have to drive the groomers up to 3 mile and groom from there north.

Grand Marais, Seney and Paradise started grooming operations earlier this week. The only one I've heard from since then is Seney. This is what their trail report was 2 days ago;

SENEY, DECEMBER 3, 2008:
The guys are grooming again today packing down the snow to get the base established. There is up to 20" of snow up north they are packing. The swamps close to town are not frozen yet but the water level is low this year so we are hoping for a quick freeze. It looks like they will be logging all season down 43 south towards Germfask and Curtis. It is snowing now and predicted to continue until Friday. Should be seeing some riders up this week-end getting in their first ride of the season. Remember to observe the gates of private property that are closed until after black powder season is over.

A REMINDER; the first couple of grooms are not going to make great trails.

12 inches to 30 inches on the ground, 3 inch to 6 inch base.

#9 North from 3 Mile was double groomed yesterday. Groomer Dan and Groomer Stan left about 8 a.m. and didn't get back till around 11:00 P.M. Dan said they didn't encounter tree problems but there is a LOT of snow and very few sleds. There are the usual wet areas and they tried to fill them in with snow. If the temps stay cold enough hopefully the water holes will freeze.

It is my understanding that the plan for today, Saturday, is to head out on #9 south towards Rexton and see how far we can get. Until we know what the "water hole" situations are, I can't say how far we will get. Groomer Jeff is heading out later this a.m. and I believe President Bob (AKA trail boss Bob) is going to groom the trail around town.

Please remember that the first couple of grooms are not going to make great trails.

Ok, here's the scoop! I groomed #8 West along the Hurricane River Truck Trail and #888 last night. They guys have been out packing the last couple of days so the trails were well defined. Once out in the woods, I had from 6 to 10 inches of fresh snowfall on top to work with. The trails were in great shape. I found no sticks or stones, just a few old wet or low spots that weren't completely filled in but are frozen so you may encounter a few dips and rolls here and there.

As an added bonus, we got about a foot of fresh, light, fluffy snow in town and more out in the snow belt over night. Today will be a blast out there. Even on the groomed portions, riding will be like breaking fresh trail with the added bonus of a packed base of about 3 to 6 inches. This will be a great day to play!

The trail into and around town is not established yet. Until the ditches can be filled and packed, ride the road edge, single file, etc.... A few areas are being shared with logging trucks. We cannot groom those sections so watch for trucks and ride the edge of the road where it's plowed. Once out of town we have good to very good conditions over the majority of the trail system.

However on some trail maps from last year ... from Trail 2 in Gould City going north to McMillan your map shows the trail number as 455 ... it is now 457 ... there is no difference in the trail, the DNR sent trail #457 signs and that is now the trail number. We haven't gotten the snow like they've been getting downstate. I'd say our immediate area picked up another 4-6" since I updated on the 7th. There really isn't much exciting in our immediate forecast. Muzzle loading season will soon be over. December 15th marks the date of opening those closed gates. Just a few more days!

JUST A QUICK NOTE THIS A.M TO LET YOU KNOW THAT GROOMER DAN HEADED OUT ON #9 NORTH ABOUT 5:00 A.M. HE STILL HAD TO DRIVE THE GROOMER DOWN THE ROAD TO THREE MILE. HE IS GOING TO TRY TO GET THROUGH TO HOLLAND LAKE. THERE IS A CONCERN ABOUT THE SWAMPY AREA UP THAT WAY AND ALL THE SNOW. THIS AREA WAS NOT GROOMED BEFORE.

The weekend is upon us and the snow just keeps on comin'... there's another LES advisory posted calling for another 6 to 9" by tomorrow morning. Yippee Kiyea! The groomers are out every night despite light traffic but packing a base that will last through the season. The trails are remarkable for this early in the season.

WARNING: Areas being shared with logging trucks are #8 West from the Pictured Rocks Visitor Center almost to the Hurricane Truck Trail, Trail #8 East from Airport/Ellen St toward #443, and #8 East on CR-416 and at the Reed and Green Bridge. We cannot groom those sections so watch for trucks and ride off the plowed portion. I may have missed a couple spots, watch for signs!

What a difference 24 hours makes!
Groomer #5 has seen some major trail time over the last few days. She began runs on Saturday morning, and has really not stopped much since, trying to cover the majority of the trail system. Things were leveled out on Saturday, and packed down well during the warm up on Sunday. We did not get hit as hard as other areas with the rain on Sunday, mostly a light drizzle all day - consequently we lost about 1/3 to 1/2 of our base. This however has resulted in a great, hard frozen base to the trail today.

Temps dropped 30+ degrees in about 5 hours last night with a flash freeze of all the roads, and parking lots. All the schools are closed within 50 miles, and with the wind, the bridge is closed to high profiles today too.

Conditions today of course are icy - that is to be expected. Southern trails have 6-8" of hard base, with 12-20" off trail. Northern trails have 10-18" of base, with 16-30" off trail. Cold temps and forecasted snow for almost every day this week should have trails about perfect for this weekend.

The following pictures were taken late Saturday evening just outside of St. Ignace. They still hold true for their appearance. Groomer Dan (hubby) and I have accepted positions at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge in N. Carolina. This starts late October 2009 through the end of January 2010. From there we HOPE to go to High Falls State Park in Georgia for positions till the first part of April. THAT part hasn't been confirmed yet.

Everything has been groomed in the last 36 hours, and there is literally no traffic out there - local or otherwise. Trails are hard packed with between 8 and 24" base, with 2-3 feet off trail.

We received several inches of fresh snow on Monday, and have 4 more today, and still snowing hard.

Limited groomer runs are scheduled for the rest of the week, which will be more then enough to handle the riders out there. Things are looking like late January riding instead of December riding out there. Don't be afraid to head on up - you will have a great time!

I have reports of handrails being down on a bridge, on the RR Grade North of Moran. The bridge is the large iron bridge North of the Burma grade. Please use extreme caution crossing this bridge until we can get it fixed.

Trails look fine. A group of six that rode in from Newberry said that there was water on the trail between Newberry and Trout Lake, but the trails were fairly smooth all the way in. The trail in St. Ignace looks to still have plenty of snow on it, with some icy spots.

Overall, it looks like we lost about half of the snow we originally had, which means that now we have 6-12" of base.

17° this a.m. and it looks to be fairly quiet out there. I haven’t actually poked my head outside yet! We received at least 4” of snow in the immediate area yesterday/over night and I’ve heard they received a bit more than that to the north.

Today will be quite cold with blowing snow and highs in the upper teens to low 20s with wind chills down below 10 degrees to near 0 at times. Tonight winds will diminish and there will even be some areas of clearing so look for fast falling temperatures. Temps the rest of the week are expected to be more “normal” (whatever that is anymore) and there is one little clipper system after the other that is expected to produce a couple of inches each day. IT ALL ADDS UP!

#9 North was rough the past couple of days due to the fact that when we tried to groom it the other day, the snow was too wet to flow through the drag so the whole trail did NOT get groomed. However, it did get groomed last night and is in good to very good shape.

#45 (the Falls Trail) was groomed by Groomer Louie last night. He groomed as far as CR 500. We were going to attempt to groom the swamp again but Louie said before he even ventured in there with the groomer, he got out and tried to walk through and sunk in
he sure doesn’t weigh as much as a groomer and a drag. TASA gives a BIG, HUGE thanks to Chef Dave from the Falls Pub. He went in this area yesterday with a sled and chain saw and cut up several 15” diameter trees and pulled them off the trail. THANKS, DAVE! Please watch for logging operations on #45 trail!

#9 south to Rexton was groomed night before last and is reported to be in good shape. Currently, Groomer Jeff is grooming the trail around Newberry.

MOST LIKELY TASA WILL NOT BE GROOMING TONIGHT AS THE GROOMER OPERATORS HAVE REQUESTED TO HAVE NEW YEAR’S EVE OFF. We will be back out on the trails New Year’s day (evening) and get things whipped back in shape.

12/29 - It's in the 20's this morning. Everything wet has now frozen up. The guys were out last night; they got everything cleaned up on the trails, cleared downed trees and branches, and it's supposed to start snowing again with up to 6 inches predicted today north of M-28. Yippee Kiyay! Until the new snow, watch for icy areas, especially in the corners.

NOTICE: As of December 22, we are not grooming #443 from #88 North until further notice. Avoid #443 north of #88. If you do continue on #443, be extremely careful and alert to logging activity. Other Areas being shared with logging trucks are Trail #8 East from Airport/Ellen St toward #443, #8 East on Old Seney Road, and CR-416. We cannot groom those sections so watch for trucks and ride off the plowed portion. I may have missed a couple spots, watch for signs!

The heat wave is over and trails are back in good shape. We got 4-5" of fresh snow again last night. All the slushy spots are froze again. Traffic on the trails has increase because of the holidays and I hear the snow down state didn't weather the heat wave and rain. This means the corners get rough and a little icy by the end of the day. We actually groomed trail 431 twice yesterday. Weather predictions for the rest of the week are cold and snow. Trails are in great shape. A nice firm base, with several inches of softer stuff on top for great riding. Groomers are scheduled to run through the weekend. All of our trails are smooth and flat with no major problems to report. We received 2-4" of new snow today, with the majority along the US-2 area.

It must’ve warmed up during the night because it is 20° this morning. It sounded like “sneet” hitting the windows around 4 a.m. but it doesn’t look icy out there.

Lake effect snow showers will take shape tonight into and through Monday. Highs on Monday will only be in the teens and very brisk winds.

Another storm will take aim on the region for late Tuesday continuing through much of Wednesday and even into early Thursday morning. Since this is a slow mover (compared to the faster one moving through today), snow accumulations could be in the 8"-12" range in spots...perhaps even higher locally. (I’LL BELIEVE THAT WHEN IT HAPPENS! Actually, I don’t think we really WANT a foot of snow!)

Even for Thursday afternoon through Saturday, occasional snow remains in the forecast with highs in the middle/upper teens north.

#9 North was groomed yesterday/last night and reported to be in good to very good condition. LOTS of snow to the north.

Groomer Dan did # 45 (the Falls trail) yesterday and reported it to be in good shape. Groomer Stan headed right back out on it last night so when he is done it should be in VERY good shape. There was a LOT of sleds on the trail during the daylight hours yesterday. TASA still has a “dead groomer…the machine, not the operator!” on trail # 9 someplace around Skyline (where the logging is going on). HOPEFULLY we will be able to get it out of there today. GROOMER DAN WILL BE HEADING OUT WITH A GROOMER ABOUT 8:30 THIS MORNING. PREZ BOB IS GOING IN ON THE TRAIL WITH HIS TRUCK. WE ARE TRYING TO GET THE DEAD MACHINE STARTED AND OFF THE TRAIL. In the meantime PLEASE use EXTREME caution!

#9 south to Rexton and Cut River was groomed two nights ago and is in good shape. Once we can get the other machine off the Falls trail, we will be back out on this trail.

1/3 - I ran #8 from the barn out to the western junction of #8 and #89 then back to #888, then #88 all the way over to #443 and south to the junction with Seney and back to the barn.. Chuck went east on #8 almost to rainbow lodge and reported no problems. I passed Teddy on the way in as he was headed out to the lakeshore #89, the rest of #8 west, and the last section of #88 from Adams Trail to #43. Overall, I'd say the trails are in Good to Very Good shape. After tonight's grooms, they should be excellent.

Trails really can't get much better then they are. Everything is wide, smooth, and flat. It is very very cold this week; the snow dust is rather bad.

We have a very hard ice base, covered with about 6" of workable snow. We have received a couple of inches of new snow over the week which has kept things looking nice.

Both groomers are running with no major problems to report. There is logging North of Brevort on the Carp River Truck Trail, (#470) towards Trout Lake. They are plowing the trail in this area, and it is perfectly ridable, but has lower snow, and is more icy. The groomer is trying to pull some snow in along there, but the banks are frozen very hard.

Time to start making your Valentines weekend plans. February 14th the Straits Area Snowmobile Club is hosting our annual Fun Run - dubbed the Bent Ski Classic. This is not a normal poker run. You will have to figure out where to go and what to do next to complete this fun-filled and family journey across our 101 miles of trail. Stop and meet club members and a groomer at the mid-day trail stop. There will be a fire to warm up, free hot dogs, hot chocolate and coffee. You can even see how loud your sled is with a decibel meter on-site. Beginning between 8 and 11 am at the Driftwood Bar in St. Ignace, and ending with an included spaghetti dinner at the VFW, it surely will be a great time for all! More information will be posted in the coming weeks, so be on the lookout!

Apparently, they did NOT take offense! The photo is what their snowmobile helmets now look like! (Well, I actually knew long ago that they had not taken offense. They seemed to be thrilled with their new nicknames!)

Tina, a wife of one of the Nuts emailed me this photo today and told me the guys were very excited to be coming up this weekend and hoped to meet the rest of the crew!

Last year after they had returned home, Dan and I recieved this HUGE box in the mail (or maybe it was UPS, can't remember). It was full of big bags of potato chips; varieties of potato chips! We took quite a few of the bags to the TASA barn to leave for the rest of the crew.

It was very cold over the weekend, which means the trails will again be very hard and flat. Everything is wide, flat and fast around here. The only trail problem to report is the trail being plowed for logging North of Brevort on the Carp River Truck Trail, (#470) towards Trout Lake, watch that section as it can get quite icy - the logger will just not work with us on this

Groomer info: To catch you up from the past week, we have a fairly major problem with #6, and it was trucked to Big Rapids for repair last Friday. They just tore it apart on Tuesday or Wednesday, so needless to say we are not expecting to get it back until sometime this week. In the meantime, #5 is pulling double duty. The starter went out on that and it took 8 hours to get it started last Friday. With no viable starter, and only one groomer, that machine ran until Tuesday when we got the new starter shipped in.

Remember, we are running only one groomer to cover our entire 101 miles of trail, so expect to see daytime grooming around here. When the groomer goes out, a full run take around 20 hours. Generally we are covering the entire system every 2 days during the week, and trying to cover the whole thing each day on the weekend. Kudos to the volunteers who are doing extra coordination to swap seats out on the trail so the machine can keep running, they have been working together quite well to make this situation as good as it can be.

Trails continue to be in excellent condition. We have a great base, and have added several inches of fresh powder on top of that today. Off trail still has tons of deep snow to discover - don't be afraid to get off trail and discover some deep snow riding. Our entire trail system was groomed Wednesday, with another full system scheduled either late Thursday, or Friday. The weekend temps are forecasted to be in the mid 20s, perfect for riding. Things are about perfect here - time to head UP and run some wide, flat and FUN trails!

Groomer #6 is still in Big Rapids for repair - they have now got the factory reps involved as they can not explain the broken bolt problem. Still no ETA on when we will get it back.

New Stop Signs: We have had a few problems at private drives this season. Although they are being groomed properly, and are signed according to the DNR handbook, people are just blowing right through them. We have had a little problem with that in the past, but this season is unacceptable. Consequently, we are upgrading some crossing with Yield, to full Stop signs. This has already been done on one drive near Trout Lake, and a few more will be done in the coming weeks. Just be aware of this when riding in our area. Yield does not mean just crack the throttle, you are supposed to be slow enough to actually yield to something in the area!

Isn'’t it hard to believe tomorrow is the 1st of February?? If you haven’t been on the trails in our area yet this season, there is still time and still plenty of snow!

We’'ve received 4-6” of new snow over the past couple of days. Daytime temps have been a bit more tolerable, however it was quite windy yesterday so that made it feel colder than it was. Nights have still been barely above 5°.

Today it could get up to 30°!! Won’t that be strange and welcome! Nights are even a bit warmer and we could see some fog towards evening or morning. Sunday appears to be the best day of the weekend with maybe even higher temps and partly sunny!

ZEN THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Ours is a world where people don't know what they want and are willing to go through hell to get it.

4° this a.m. and expected to get into the 20’s. We received about 3-5” of fluffy snow yesterday/overnight. This weekend there is a significant warm up headed our way and this is a direct quote from a Weather Wizard;

Look for a quick recovery Thursday and Friday as highs will reach the 20s Thursday and low to mid 30s for most Friday with quiet conditions (some light snow is possible in northern areas Thursday). Beginning Saturday, it looks like a several day period of some of the mildest weather we have seen in awhile is headed our way...with highs in the mid and upper 30s for many of us. Ok, I'm really getting bored with this never changing report, how about you? The trails are flat, smooth and fast! Light traffic, yada yada yada... UGH. Local motels have met the economic challenge. They have lowered their rates and are offering deals! If you are planning that one trip UP, now's the time to enjoy what you love to do on the best trails around.

Once Again, the trails remain in great shape. We are getting more traffic out there and several inches of fresh snow almost every day. By the time the groomers head out, you've got our work cut out for us. Norm and Chris had the opportunity to run a John Deere groomer this week on our trails. Aside from fuel capacity and weight, they were impressed. Of course, Norm really put her to the test breaking a fresh trail, got her good and stuck, and called in a Tucker to the rescue! One tug and he was free to continue on.

Cabin Fever in Grand Marais will be on Valentines Day this year with plans for a snowmobile poker run, cardboard sled races, a chili cook-off and more fun events throughout the day with a Valentine's Sock Hop in the evening. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun! Check it out at www.grandmaraismichigan.com.

Then the UP200 Sled Dog Championship returns on February 21st. We've had a lot of snowmobilers come just to check out the dog sled races. Grand Marais is the mid-point of the race where you have a chance to visit with the mushers, see these awe inspiring dogs and their dedication to the race, enjoy some nice hot soup and goodies, and learn what this is all about at the Community Center in Grand Marais. The snowmobile trail runs right along side the dog track as they approach the gate where you can get a birds eye view as they finish. Remember, the dogs do not use snowmobile trails but they do cross at several points. The crossings are well marked and manned. Just be alert and be ready to watch these amazing people run 10 or 12 dogs attached to a wooden sled for over 200 miles of wilderness, with only the supplies that they can carry.

Reminder - Trail #443 is CLOSED to snowmobile traffic between Trail #88 and Trail #8 for the season - Easily noticeable signs are posted with detour information. I saw a lot of tracks still going right on by the signs. Please, do not go onto #443 and watch for logging trucks where the trails cross roads. I saw the tail lights of one as I came up to the Old Seney Road on Trail #88 around midnight and again on M-77 even later. They are hauling around the clock! Detour using Trail #88 to Trail #888 to go north or Trail #8 to #888 to go south. Other Areas being shared with logging trucks are Trail #8 East from Airport/Ellen St toward #443, and #8 East on Old Seney Road for a short distance. We cannot groom those sections so watch for trucks and ride off the plowed portion wherever possible. I may have missed a couple spots, watch for signs!

So, here we are the first weekend in Feb - the annual I-500 event is upon us, and the weather is forecasted to be warm again. This happened 2 out of the last 3 years. Right now the trails are in excellent condition, they really can't get any better. Deep, hard packed base, smooth wide trails and flat corners. Oh did I mention low traffic too? Riding is superb around here right now.

Now later this weekend what is going to happen? Hard to predict for sure. They are calling for a big warm-up for Friday, Sat, and Monday on out. The trails will fair fine in the long run, there is such a huge base built up out there, but where a problem could develop is if that deep base of hard pack snow gets warm, and saturated if it rains, there is nothing we can do to keep large moguls from developing. All that deep snow is going to want to move. We are already planning on getting the groomers out and flatten things down before it re-freezes, but during the day with very warms temps things may get destroyed with moderate to heavy traffic. This is going to happen everywhere that has a deep base, not just here.

If you ride you will see that things are just great out there. That base is 18"-24" deep and that is the low snow area of the RR Grade. You will also notice some stop signs that were not there last week. Yes there are a few new signs on the RR Grade to slow people down. Please be aware of that while riding.

Trails were in great shape going into the weekend but the warm temps Sat/Sun made them hard to keep smooth during the day. It was back down to the teens last night so they are back in great shape today.

Sault Ste. Marie to Brimley, Trail #8 -

Base 4-8 inches -Trail is in Outstanding Condition. When crossing the bridge in Brimley make sure you go with flow of traffic and when in town itself. Watch for skiers at the trail crossings.

Brimley to Raco, Trail #8 -

Base 4-10 inches -Trail is in Excellent Condition. Drifting taking place in the open areas with the fresh snow

Raco to Naomikong [where Paradise meets us], Trail #8 -

Base 6-14 inches - Trail is in Outstanding Condition with many, many, many, inches of fresh deep snow off the trail in the woods and on the forest service roads. The wind is still making drifts in any open areas.

Sault Ste. Marie City Trail, Trails #497, #449, parts of #8 & #49 -

Base 1-5 inches - Trail is in Good to Excellent Condition. Trail in good shape at the new Super Wal-Mart construction site. It will be that way all winter as they continue to build the store. Watch for truck traffic and fresh piles of moved dirt!

City curfew is from 1am - 6 am. Remember most City streets are open to traffic 20mph, stop at all intersections, and right hand side of street not on side walks. Watch for closed streets that are posted, mainly around the hospital, university, and state trunk lines.

Sault Ste. Marie to Kinross, Trail #49 -

Base 2-8 inches - Trail is in Excellent Condition. When the trail is running along roads make sure you go with the flow of traffic on the right side of the road.

The Downtown Trail is OPEN and in use. The trail is the only place on Portage Ave. where sleds are legal to ride.

Warm and soft described last Friday and Saturday. A heavy light mist was in the air all day Sat, but no major rain. Yes we did loose some snow, maybe 8" or so, but it did not hurt riding much at all. The only problem it has presented is a couple small spots on the town trail are really dirty, or down to pavement. You have about 2 block of that to contend with, other then that everything is good to go. While things were warm, we did get the groomers out to get things flattened out - things should have refrozen nice and smooth. And yes, Dave did get the groomer stuck North of Moran, but Jimmy D was able to help him get it out OK.

Weather this morning is at 24d and forecasted to stay below freezing all day. In spite of the doom and gloom forecast, things should be just fine around here for the coming weekend. We are supposed to get warm on Tuesday and stay that way until Wednesday night, when a light rain is supposed to turn back to snow. Downstate is forecasted to be above freezing almost all week, but things should be cooler here. I will give regular updates on conditions to help you would with this weekends riding decisions.

*Time to start making your Valentines weekend plans. Feb 14th the Straits Area Snowmobile Club is hosting our annual Fun Run - Dubbed the Bent Ski Classic. Not a normal poker run, no sir. You will have to figure out where to go, what to do next to complete this fun-filled and family journey across our 101 miles of trail. Stop and meet club members and a groomer at the mid-day trail stop. There will be a fire to warm up, free hot dogs, hot chocolate and coffee. You can even see how loud your sled is with a decibel meter on-site. Beginning between 8 and 11 at the Driftwood Bar in St. Ignace, and ending with an included spaghetti dinner at the VFW, it surely will be a great time for all! More information will be posted in the coming week, so be on the lookout!

Things are just fine out there today. It got a lot colder last night, and has firmed things up nicely.

2 things to watch out for:

#1 Just west of the trail stop location, there were 3 large slush holes yesterday. I don't know if they completely re-froze last night or not. Use caution riding through there today. It should be just fine by tomorrow.

#2 Some idiot drove his truck out a couple miles of castle rock road, from the RR grade, yesterday. We could not get a driver to take an extra shift last night, so that area is currently rutted up pretty bad. The groomer will be heading out of St. Ignace this afternoon to take care of that. Just be aware that it is there - we will have it fixed up soon.

Town trail to US-2 is not in the best shape. It is ridable, but not in the great condition like it was up until last week.

Everything still holds true, just that it is colder now, and we don't anticipate the weather tearing up trails.

Overall I would guess that we lost 2/3 to 3/4 of the snow that we had last week, but we survived.

I just talked to a groomer that is finishing up his run on the North trails, and currently there is between 1 and 2 feet of snow and ice base left on the trails. Everything is flattening out nice, and there are no major problems to report. There are just a couple of tight corners over by Cut River that have some ice in the bottom, but not even really a problem. The US-2 town trail has that 1000 or so feet of shoulder riding which is pretty much bare, but you can get along the groomed portion of the rest of it. Likewise, there is some bare pavement when heading through downtown. Neither is really that big of a deal.

The off trail snow has been cut by 1/2 to 2/3 with 1-2 feet left. The weather dudes got it wrong, again even on a 24 hr forecast this time. We did not get the snow that we were supposed to last night. We are currently experiencing some light, and heavy wet flurries. The majority of the rain did not hit this area, we got a light drizzle through some of last night - that is probably what saved us.

Logging Info:
There was logging North of Brevort on the Carp River Truck Trail, (#470) towards Trout Lake. They are all done now, and we are trying to rebuild this portion of the trail. It is perfectly ridable, but has lower snow, and some ice on it. We are doing our best to pull new snow back on the trail, but it will take some time to fix.

WOW!!!! Did we get some snow! I think total over the past couple of days HAS to be 15” to 20” in places!

It was howling, blowing and white out conditions at times yesterday. Old Man Winter made a gusty return!

Temp this a.m. is 21° and for the next couple of days the temps are to be quite tolerable. Winds could be an issue for wind-chill and some blowing, but nothing too severe.

Ya need to get up here and ride!!! The end of the season is drawing near!

when it warms up enough and that 2 mile stretch starts to get a little “iffy”, DO NOT HOP ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS TO GET AROUND IT! You will just have to deal with the sloppiness of that stretch when it happens

2/18 ~ We're Back!! All is white in the world of Grand Marais! The trees are hanging heavy and it's hard to tell the difference between the landscape and the sky! Since it started yesterday morning we've gotten about 6 inches of fresh snow in town, 8 to 12 out in the snow belt, and it's still coming! It's the kind of snow we can work with too! Wet and heavy, perfect for packing and the temperatures are supposed to drop into the teens which means the trails will freeze down after being groomed tonight! OH, Yeah! They are saying "Plan on total snowfall amounts of 8 to 19 inches during this storm

The storm came thru, 8-10" in town and 12" up north. Trails are all snow covered again and the town looks a winter wonderland again. Larry said the snow is soft as is 30 degrees this morning. Riders were out all night so the trails didn't set up after they were groomed. That means the corners get blown out easy and they get rough quick. Don said he will schedule them to be double groomed this weekend to keep up with the traffic.

Trails are in really good shape. In fact excellent. It snowed hard with blizzard conditions all day Saturday. Added between 4 and 6 inches. Off trail is getting there, but still really hard under a thin layer of soft stuff. The trails have a smooth hard frozen base, with workable snow on top – near perfect! The groomers have it all flattened out and good to go.

The town trail up last night. Things are rather thin along US-2, but the rest of the town trails are good to go, with maybe a short section of pavement, if the sun gets to the blacktop real bad. The rest of the trails are in good shape. You may find just a little ice in the tightest corners, and we are still pulling in some snow along the previous section that was plowed for logging, but the weekend snow has that just about fixed.

We got a surprise 1.5" of heavy wet snow on Wednesday, capped with a little drizzle to pack everything in. Trails have a deep hard base, with several inches of workable snow on top. Most ice in the corners have been covered, with no major problem areas to report. Roadsides are still a little thin, but perfectly passable. Town trails area groomed and passable, with the US-2 trails VERY thin, but again, passable. Ice bridge to Mackinac Island continues to see heavy traffic. Groomers continue to run a regular schedule.

February 27th
We probably got 6-10 inches of snow last night. If you are out riding expect to see drifts for a full 24 hours after the storm as we may have not hade time to cover the entire trail system with the groomers.

After the storm, the weekend looks like great riding!

WINTER IS STILL HERE AND JACK FROST IS HERE TOO. It is more like DEEEEEEP FREEZE.

Currently we are at -12°
.the last day of February. I think March is going to come in like a lion. It isn’t supposed to be very warm today, but I think we might see some sun. We did get another 5-10” Thursday night/Friday a.m.

Not much changes for tomorrow. Mostly sunny skies with highs back in the teens and twenties are the forecast. Some light lake effect snow showers hang around but they will be light. Less than 1 inch of new snow is possible.

Some clouds move back in Monday and along with them will be a few snow showers. Accumulations stay light again with less than an inch likely. Highs warm to a range of 18-25 degrees.

The mercury keeps warming through the week with highs topping out Thursday. You will see readings in the 30's. YES!!!!

#9 North has been groomed and is good to very good.

#45 to the Falls was groomed last night and is in good shape.

#9 South to Rexton, Cut River and Trout Lake is being groomed. Also Groomer Dan left at 3:00 a.m. (WITH THE # 9 GROOMER) to groom the trails around town and then as far south as Rexton. Groomer Jeff will be grooming the rest of # 9.

And just a reminder about the logging going on between Rexton and Trout Lake
when it warms up enough and that 2 mile stretch starts to get a little “iffy”, DO NOT HOP ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS TO GET AROUND IT! You will just have to deal with the sloppiness of that stretch when it happens
.and it won’t happen for a while.

2/27/09
5-8" in town over night and up to 10" up north. The bare spots in the swamp are covered again but they do have ice underneath the powder. Once out of the swamp the trails are awesome. It'll be a good weekend to ride.

PARADISE TRAIL REPORT (as reported via their website);

Point trail# 452: Groomer Woody reported the point is in good shape
Pine Stump # 8 : Groomer Mike said the trail is in good shape with plenty of snow.

We received about 7 - 8 inches of new snow last night and now some extreme winds! The trails are great and are being groomed daily!! Come enjoy the ride!! Curtis Trail System: Trail 45 to Newberry - Excellent Trail 2 to Gould City, Engadine & Naubinway – Excellent. Just east of town between Lilac Lane and Sandtown Rd. there is a stretch of about 1 1/2 miles where they are logging. The area is signed and about 1/2 mile of it is very rough with equipment near the trail. Also keep in mind near Naubinway you are likely to see deer. The calendar says it is March, and the forecast is looking that way too. They are now saying that we will have several says of above freezing temps in the day, and it is not going to get very cold at night. This means that the sides of the roads and the small parts of the town trail are going to go away soon, but the main trails will be fine for some time to come. We have a heavy 12" ice base, covered with over a foot of packed snow. Riding will be just fine. We will however have a more difficult time keeping up with the grooming. Expect things to get tore up if we have any kind of traffic - there is nothing that can be done about that. It looks like it will be like that across the whole EUP.

After a pretty rough weekend where there were quite a few riders here on Saturday, the trails got pretty tore up. Snow was loose and slushy, with a few slush holes here and there. Nothing that could be done about that with the weather we had. Sunday things cooled back down and got a bit crunchy, but everything was quite icy and slick. There were no major meltdowns to ruin sections of the trail. The sides of the roads were tough going however.

Sunday night we were on the North edge of the surprise snow, and got between 4 and 5 inches of fresh stuff. The groomers are out this morning packing it onto the base, and riding should be pretty good for the coming week. As that snow gets used up, you can expect some icy areas in the corners - normal March riding stuff. The sides of the roads will likely go away in a few days.

The weather forecast is all over the place again for the coming week. Some say a bit of rain, others a bit of snow, all say very high winds mid week, and cold temps for the weekend. Our base can survive another week of drizzle no problem, so with the cold temps, the Poker Run this weekend will be on, and trails should still be perfectly rideable.

Our base survived just fine. We got a little bit of snow on the Southern areas, and a bit more in the Northern areas that have made them even more ridable, with some icy areas in the corners. The paved roads are shot, gravel roads about gone too. The logging area South of Trout Lake on the Truck Trail, where they had plowed it is icy for that mile or two, perfectly ridable though. In the St. Ignace area, the sides of Brevort Lake Road trail is rather tough for that short stretch. In town, there are the 2 sections of pavement to get by. The Mackinac Bridge connector has 2 blocks of tough going, but a shelf has been cut into the bank along a good chunk to fix up another block, with the rest of that trail holding fine. Drive your truck along that stretch to see if you are OK with it, otherwise trailer to the Ice Rink - riding is fine from there.

Going to be low 30s this weekend, almost perfect riding - with a warm up expected next week. Only 2 weeks left, might want to get while the getting is good.

Things over the weekend were pretty good for those squeezing one more ride in. Overall our trail conditions were real nice, and perfectly rideable. The RR Grade is getting slushy over the ice base for sure, but no problems reported with overheating, and only 1 sled mishap that I heard of by running out of oil. Thanks to those who participated in the poker run. We had a few new faces around, which is always good to see. Everybody got a prize too, even if it was just a 12 pack of Pepsi.

Overall, trail conditions will deteriorate all week. It was below freezing last night, but not much. The RR Grade will be all ice by Wednesday, and the ice base on all the trails will probably be visible by this weekend. There is still about a foot of ice, covered by 6-12 inches of material on the Northern trails. I still think that there will be riding to be had this coming weekend, with problem areas, but mostly for the diehards. For the majority of us we are pretty much done, unless we get more snow on Thursday than just the trace they are talking. There will be mostly water and slush on the trails, even if there is ice underneath. The open areas are going to go pretty quickly in 50d temp days.

The forecasted temps are not good for sledding, and we may see the snow go almost as fast as it showed up last November. Overall, I guess that we can't complain about this season’s weather, or conditions overall, things were pretty darn good.

TASA TRAIL REPORT
December 16, 2009

The groomers are out and trails 45 & 9 are in good shape. It has been snowing most of day with expected totals to reach 1 - 3 inches. Trail 45 from county road 500 to the falls is wet in spots. With the grant we received we should have the spots cleaned up in early January. Trails have a base of 4 -6 inches but they get a little thinner the farther south you go. We have updated the Newberry Village trail map. There are just a couple of changes from the last map.

The TASA trail system covers state and private lands but please remember that during the off season the private lands are not open to the public unless you have permission from the landowner.

Just talked to our guests that have been out riding since early this morning. They said the trails are G R E A T! They bragged about running into only three other sleds and two groomers between here and Seney, and the fresh powder is awesome. They rated the trails on a scale of 1 to 10 at an 8.

The Castle Rock Road, the south part of #471, has about a 10” base, but the Railroad Grade was much thinner with about a 4” base.

All of our trails have been initially panned down, but there is not really enough snow out there to do a major groom. The DNR wants us to wait to get some more snow before we do any heavy grooming out there. The good news is this morning’s forecast showed that we are supposed to get a Christmas storm. That should make us perfectly rideable for the week between Christmas and New Year’s. It still will not be anywhere near perfect, but we should not have any major problems either. Trails should be good to go for the weekend. The RR Grade heading out of St. Ignace is quite thin, but perfectly rideable. The base developed about perfect, and there is between 2" & 4" on top of a smooth ice base. The trails should hold some traffic well for the upcoming weekend.

There is a trail hazard, about 5 miles north of Moran, or 2-3 miles north of the Burma Grade, on the RR Grade, where there was some water flowing across the trail for a short stretch. Not sure if this is still a problem, but just be aware when riding that stretch between Trout Lake & Moran.

Both groomers will run today, and at the least again Saturday night. We are still really just panning things down - there is not enough snow to make huge moguls by any means. The trail inside town will not be groomed until we get more snow - can't risk tearing people’s yards up. You can certainly ride it, but no grooming. Things are very thin along the ice rink lot, but it improves as soon as you get under I-75 and head out of town. As stated, there is about 2"-4" on top of the ice grade, with a few rocks that poked through here and there. I actually see more grass and twigs then rocks - this is from the big brushing project last fall. All of the other roads have between 3"-6" over the ice base, with a little less on the Carp River TT, where the loggers plowed it. Watch for ice in the corners for sure.

Forecast is for a few inches of snow over the next couple of days, and big winds for New Year’s Day. That is supposed to hit the normal belts with lake effect snow. If the winds are strong enough it will bring that stuff across the UP to us. So things should improve a little over the next couple of days. Things certainly will not get worse with the very cold temps forecasted.

So, to sum it up – trails are thin, but perfectly rideable.

Well, the phrase that still sums everything up is: Thin, but perfectly ridable.

We really could use some more snow though. As more and more sleds ride what we have, it will get pounded down into the ice. Right now the groomers are just pulling the snow back in that the sleds are blowing to the sides.

It was cold here over the weekend. Friday the big lake was clear of ice, and Saturday morning there was skim ice all the way to the island (which has since mostly blown away)

Logging on the Borland Road (#471) is all done and is nicely fixed up. It may be another 2 weeks for the other company to finish up.

Thin-thin but ridable.

We made it through last weekend OK. It has been more than two weeks since we have seen any new snow, and it is showing. The RR Grade from just North of St. Ignace to Moran in the open areas is showing more and more rocks. The pipeline now has a couple of bad sand holes, and there are some rocks poking through here and there in the areas where the loggers plowed things. Everything is actually pretty flat out there. Anyone in the area can head out and get some good riding in, just understand that there are some rocks out there here and there.

January 14 update

It has been right at freezing for the last 2 days, and things are getting soft. Trails have not improved, but have not gotten a whole lot worse either as we have had no traffic. I can't recommend riding out of St. Ignace. The Northern trails are in better shape, but not a whole lot better.

Please be careful around curves. The weather has cooled down and there is some ice around the curves, and bare spots on the hills. We still have some snow on trails but it is getting thin in spots. We are adjusting the times we go out grooming. We are expecting snow and cold weather to move in starting tonight with 6 -12 inches overnight. We are grooming, although the snow is in granular icy form. Dave in groomer #11 went north on trail # 9, and Louis in groomer # 10 went North on trail #45 to the falls.

Trail #9 south to Hemlock Ridge road (trail 2) has a 0 -4 inch base and is in fair condition.

Trail #9 north is in fair condition. The base is 4 - 6 inches and riders are reporting Fair conditions, please watch for ice and dirt, especially on hills and around curves. There have been reports of some thin spots due to the warm weather.

Trail #45 North is in fair shape with a 4-6 inch base, but, there are 2 logging areas on it. One north, and one south, of the Skyline Trail Head. It is plowed and can be rough at times. There is very little snow on trail from 500 to the falls.

Trail #2 to Rexton is in fair condition with a 1 -3 inch base.

Trail #473 has about 7 miles of plowed road from Rexton south to Epoufette due to logging in the area. Please watch for trucks and deer in the area. The base is marginal to 3 inches and in fair condition.

Trail #473 Rexton to Trout lake has a 1 -3 inch base and is in fair condition. The groomer did break through the ice and there are some wet spots. We need more snow in this area.

Town trails are open and in poor condition with a 0-2 inch base. The ally is down to dirt.

We are grooming, although the snow is in granular icy form. We ended up with about an inch of new snow overnight with more on the way.

Groomers did not run all week, and will both run tonight to pack down that 1" or so we got on Monday/Tuesday. That snow brightened up the trails, and they actually look pretty decent for the amount of snow on them.

Just as before, all the trails have a decent ice base, with between 1” and 4" on them - even the RR Grade. There are still two bad, but passable sections of trail. There is still the problem with the pipeline section of 473 out of St. Ignace; for about 1 mile, you will have to ride to the side. And there are two 100-yard sections of the RR Grade between Castle Rock Rd, and Moran that are down to gravel in the middle of the trail. St. Ignace out is OK.

EVERYTHING we have is total ice. Some trails have a bit of broken, processed ice on top of the trail ice base, but there is not much, and it isn't very good.

The decent trails are: Caffey from Rexton in, most of the Burma Grade, most of the RR Grade from Trout Lake to the Burma Grade / Iron Bridge area, and most of the Cedarville connector - on our side.

The rest of the trails - the majority of them have various problems, ranging from sand on the trail surface on the pipeline section of #473 to long total gravel sections on the RR Grade from St. Ignace to Moran. There are some gravel problems, and major ice problems on the Carp River TT, heading North out of Brevort, and even the Cut River trail has some problem areas, and water holes.

We have a total stoppage on grooming until further notice. We need AT LEAST 4-6" to get things back to ridable in the Southern Areas, and MAY BE able to get away with 3-4" in the Northern Areas. The groomers will not be run in the mud and gravel, and we need to get some decent snow Friday if we have any chance of getting things back in shape. The forecast is anywhere from 1" to 5" of snow, so who knows what we are going to get. Next week is not looking good for snow; in fact it may warm up and start melting a bit again. The sun is higher now for sure, and we need to get another workable base up to get any riding in. This information will be updated if we get a decent amount of snow.

Last Friday’s snow amounted to about 3" on the Northern Trails, and about 2" on the Southern trails. The Northern trail was groomed on Friday, and things turned out well.

The Southern trail remains ungroomed, and there are no plans to grooming those trails without an 8” snowstorm. All Mackinac Bridge crossers are advised to take the Western loop or trail #473 to get out of St. Ignace. You should be able to get through OK, but it won't be anywhere near perfect - especially in town, which has not been groomed at all this year. Right now, plans are to groom the Northern and West connector trails on Thursday or Friday, and they will probably sit there for the weekend. Additional grooming will depend on any snow that we get - if any.

The forecast for this week, should just barely maintain what snow we have, and then we will loose some this coming weekend. The last weather report showed a warm up, and maybe rain on Saturday.
