    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 11/21

Its a beautiful snowy day out there! We are loving it. Trails do not open until December 1st, but conditions are looking good for trails to be ready to ride.

We had to get out and play a bit in the snow with our sleds. We have about 8 inches on the ground right now, so enjoyed a quick ride around on the backroads/two tracks.

It just makes you giddy to see the snow back!

NINE Days until the trails open! Are you ready?

My family will be staying on the west side of Manuka lake the week after Christmas (snow permitting) and we have never snowmobiled in the Gaylord area before. Is there an easy way to snowmobile to a trail and back into town from that area or should we trailer from the rental? If trailering, where do you recommend staging? Thanks.

    Sebefus,

Email me at howardsth14@yahoo.com and I'll give you my phone number to call. I live on the east side of Manuka Lake and the trails are close. I can show you how to hop right on and get into town no problem. I take my sled to work quite a few times in the winter (in town).
  3.
Are your sleds ready? Because the trails are here! and the snow is here! Trails officially open in just TWO days, on Monday December 1st.

We got another 3-5 inches of new snow this morning. There is plenty of snow for riding.

Snow continues to be in the forecast for the 5 day forecast, so its very good for the first week of riding. Enjoy it before the holidays while everyone else is busy with their shopping.

We are directly located on trail 7. You can park your sled outside your room, be on your sled and on the trail in ONE minute! Don't waste time or trouble trying to find the trail.

Enjoy a hot breakfast before hitting the trail. Included in the room price. We'll be waiting to hear from you. 989-732-2703 or 989-732-4914.

    sebefus,

As long as we keep getting a bit of lake affect to keep the side roads covered, you will not need to rent a trailer. The trails are close and there is a couple of way you can get to them from the west side of Lake Manuka. You can visit my web cam to keep track of the snow conditions around lake Manuka - http://www.campbear.com.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 12/02

Best start to the season we've had since we've been up here... 6 years. If you want snow - we have snow! .. we measured nearly 18 inches out back. Higher drifts. Today, we have a calm day. Weatherman just reported that starting tomorrow again, constant snow for next 7 days. Heavy snow in the forecast Wed - Fri. Looking good!!

Mike talked to Don at the DNR office. They will be out grooming today! so trails should be in great shape. Lakes of the North won't get groomed until later this week (working on a peice of equipment that will be used there). The plan is to groom 6 days a week, often twice a day. That sounds good doesn't it?

    Hello,
As a property owner on Starvation Lake Road, Mancelona Michigan, we get a large number of recreational snowmobilers. I have one concern with the lack of respect to property owners. I live here year around. It should be noted if snowmobilers are not on a trail, public land, state land, or a road, they are more than likely on private property.

I am handicapped and do not have a snow plow. I use a walk-behind snow blower to keep my drive opened up. In snowblowing my driveway, large snow banks accumulate on either side of my drive. Some snowmobilers find these snow banks as a challenge and enjoy riding up on them. In doing so, snowmobilers pack the snow across the end of my drive. Using a sled and of course the weight of the individual on the sled, this snow packs down as hard as concrete and is impossible for me to remove. THIS IS MY YARD! I would appreciate snowmobilers staying on the road and stay off of my property. Furthermore, I believe there are laws governing snowmobile driving on the roadway. Starvation Lake Road is not for drag-racing at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour!

I would also ask snowmobilers to understand people out here have jobs and must get their sleep. On weekends there are those who get out of the bar at 2 AM closing and find the need to drag-race at dangerous speeds. Some of these sleds have little to no sound abatement. I would guess if I got in my vehicle after being in the bar, and at 2 AM or later, drove through your neighborhood in excess of the posted legal speed limit, drag racing with a vehicle with no muffler, I would be arrested. If I drove my vehicle through your yard, again I would be arrested. All I am asking is have respect for the rules of the road and to have respect for the property owners whose neighborhoods you ride through. Riding down the road against traffic on the wrong side of the road is illegal and dangerous.

I am fully for and support snowmobiling in our area and am not trying to promote a "NO Fun Zone" but it would go a long way with those of us that are fortunate enough to live in the area, that you also promote the legal and courteous use of sleds in the area.

Lots of snow in the regions west of Gaylord and in the Gaylord area. Seems to be some problem with the grooming in the immediate Gaylord area. Conditiions are rough in spots. However, if you can go west or south you can find some very good riding -- NORTH GUIDE

RAYS RETREAT TRAIL REPORT - December 4, 2008

Just returned from a great ride. I made the overall conditions ‘fair to good’ for the Gaylord trails. .. still plenty of rough areas.

    Totally excellent were trails 76, 79, 679!

We headed down to Waters to fill up with gas. Headed out onto trail 4. Rolling bumps. Not miserable riding at a speed of 30-40 but not going to get any faster unless you want to jarr some innards loose! Mancelona Road was bumpy… as we came through camper alley heading into Lakes of North we hit a smooth stretch.. and we though, ahhhh… going to get good. It wasn’t that long before the bumps were back.

Even the power lines had enough whoops in them you couldn’t let it out and enjoy a little speed unless you wanted to fly over your handlebars.

The straight away along the airport (Lakes of North) was smooth and fun. The wind was pushing us there.

Once we hit onto 76 things were smooth! Such fun. Occasionally a cloud would open and big flakes would come down for awhile. So pretty. The rest of the ride was fantastic snow fun. Saw the groomer from Jordan Valley and from Au Sable Valley (Grayling). These guys are doing great jobs.

If you’re looking for a really good ride I recommend hitting trail 7 from Frederick South…. then hitting 78, 79, 679. All of this is fun!

We had 80 plus miles of riding, and 80% of it was great.

Can someone from the Gaylord area provide me with an honest summary of what is going on with the grooming of the Gaylord trails. I've talked to several friends who rode there last week and they were really disappointed. They are canceling plans for Gaylord.

Don't care much for the politics of the situation, just what I should expect if I bring a large group of people to the area for the first time. I have a rental in the area reserved for late December and am leaning towards going elsewhere based on what I've heard from those who have ridden the Gaylord trails and speculated as to what they will be like the rest of the year.

    Thanks.

We are creating a special message board for the Gaylord grooming situation.....

Gaylord Grooming Issues - What is happening with the grooming in Gaylord?

We have reports from here that the guy doing the grooming for the DNR drove the groomer into a ditch. I think they have gotten it out of the ditch and are grooming again....

RAYS RETREAT TRAIL REPORT - December 6, 2008

Gaylord trails have been groomed. Riders went out last night midnight taking trail 4 and report it was good riding. Trail 7 in front of us was groomed about 6 pm last night and its greatly improved.

Sparky and I just watched sledders flying by the motel, and didn't see them bumping along!

    More snow.

Its deep. You do not want to get off trail without being prepared to dig yourself out. One room had to leave early this morning after a trip to the walk in clinic for a wrenched back after digging his sled out.

RAYS RETREAT TRAIL REPORT - December 7, 2008

We took a quick ride after cleaning rooms late this afternoon. Headed out on trail 7 into Gaylord. Rough.... bumpity, bump.. we then took 774 up to Big Boys for supper. This has always been one of my favorite quick trips because its generally in great shape... some fun straight runways along the power lines and across from airport. It was much more enjoyable than trail 7, but I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't flat. We were still able to fly along at a good clip.

We had talked about riding a bit further after eating, but after the bumps getting there I said lets just go home. We're tired and worn out already, don't need a rough ride.

What a delightful surprise when we headed out, and the trail had been groomed all the way home! ... and that's just how quickly trail conditions can change. If I would have just ridden that one way my report would not have been good at all. The ride home changed all that. It was a great ride coming home.. and we did take a short side trip along trail 4 before heading back home.

Trails should be in good shape for tomorrows riding. Wish I could get back out there.

So remember how quickly things can change along the trail. From the time you read this report, to the time you get a chance to get on the trail its completely different from the conditions I experience. Just want you all to keep that in mind.

Its looking like another wave of great winter storm weather heading in tomorrow evening! ... love it!

Thanks for creating the second board and your objective reporting of the trail conditions & related issues.

I was making some adjustments and I accidentally deleted the Gaylord Grooming Issues Board..... let's hope the DNR can get their act together. If anyone has any additional info, just post it here and I'll get the board going again.

Anyway, it sounds like the DNR is out grooming again.......

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 12/10

It was a beautiful day on the trails!
We had snow all day yesterday, another 6-8 inches around us. They got more in surrounding areas. Everyday we seem to get another fresh layer. No stale snow laying around here in Northern Michigan.

Gaylord, MI - December 10, 2008We headed north on trail 7/4 into Gaylord. A few bumps, but not much. We still traveled along at a good clip, mostly 40 mph. I really don't like to go much faster than that along here with the railroad tracks, and several narrow areas.

The section running behind Extreme was very rough, but it can't be groomed right there. Crossing over US 27 following trail 4 onto the North Loop. This hasn't been groomed since fresh snow, but it was still good riding. Very few bumps.
We then took 448 to Lewistown. Our first time riding to Lewistown. This was excellent riding. It had been freshly groomed and was pure pleasure.

We stopped for lunch in Lewistown. I found it a little confusing manuevering thru Lewistown itself. Zigs and Zags through the city streets. This was some rough going mainly because every time it crosses a street, the snow banks are so deep from snow plows its some hill climbing to get up and over. I was sure I was going to tip over two different times. Lean and gas got me back onto the straighway before that happened.

448 and 449 were beautiful just iced runways. A little stretch where there is a bridge, and groomer can't get thru was very bumpy but shortlived.

We rode a total of 88 miles. Both of us enjoyed it all the way. No ibuprofen needed.
1-3 inches of snow forecasted for tomorrow, and 3-5 inches Thurs night.

We saw just a few riders, but those few unnerved me enough to be glad I don't have to ride on the weekend when there would be so many more of them to scare me.
Enjoy the snow, but drive safely. When you're coming up on a hill - remember to stay on your side - as you come flying up and over it could be me you're headed right into! ... luckily there were no trees on my side and both Mike and I were able to swerve a sharp right to avoid a head on.

It's always nice to do the hand signals indicating 1 rider, 2, or 5 behind you. But if you're racing 80 mph, riding standing up and can't handle your sled with the one hand... don't bother! I'll understand. A yellow sled came flying by attempting to do just that, lost control and got my pulse jng for a room that starts your day off with a hot breakfastumping again.

If you're able to get away during the week, that's the best time to enjoy good trails with little traffic.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 12/16

Riders that rode yesterday were saying at breakfast this morning it was alot of rough riding. The trail had frozen rock hard solid and with the high winds yesterday, snow was blowing off the trail.

We got two inches of new snow overnight. We left this morning with the intention of riding south, to ride the Cranberry Trail. Rode trail 7 south down to Frederic, crossed over 27 and started south thru the woods. We went only 5 miles and decided to turn around. Very rough. Headed back and went west catching the Blue Bear. Rode 679 and 79 to Starvation Lake. Then took the same way back home.

It was fair to good riding the trip to Starvation Lake. There is a good rock hard solid base from the all day freezing drizzle on the snow Sunday, and then the very quick freeze up that night. Some chunked up areas that were rough. The stretch from Waters down to Frederick, trail 7... some jerk drove his four wheel drive truck on it while it was soft. So there were some good sized ruts. (coming back groomer had been thru and it was better... several inches of snow will fill those in)... but can't jerks find anything better to do?

When we left The Hideaway and headed back, the groomer was just coming up to that point. The trails back home were all freshly groomed and greatly improved. It was a good ride back home. No problem with running a steady 40 mph.

Remember its an ice base under that snow so take it easy on the corners and braking at the stop signs. You could easily slide full circle (I know!)

It was a fun ride and well worth getting outside to enjoy. The forecast is calling for snow tonight, and possible snow storm on Friday.

I just sold my two sleds this week. Im glad i did. Just saw on the news that trail permits will go to 35 bucks in 2009 and 45 bucks in 2010. Screw that. When the trail permits started they were 10 bucks. Thank the idiots at MSA for the increase.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 12/21

We just returned from a great ride heading over to The Settings for a late lunch/early dinner. It was a shorter ride than we normally do, but after cleaning rooms 45 miles was enough to enjoy.

We took trail 7 (in front of us) to 4, and traveled that over to Lakes of the North. Very good riding. We've had light snow all day with wind gusts. We knew the groomer was ahead of us as we got off the Mancelona Hills thru the Camper Valley. We caught up with him just at the powerlines, when we had to pass him. Trails were still in decent shape except for some corners and bottoms of hills. The curves and hills had bumps in them just to wake you up in case you were getting complacent enjoying the good ride.

We enjoyed sandwiches inside. When we headed out, there was the groomer coming in. The return trip was a great ride on the newly groomed trail. We made excellent time enjoying the time out on the trail.

All our rooms enjoyed good riding this today and yesterday. Trails are in overall good to great shape. Fresh snow continues to fall and be in the forecast thru this week.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 12/22

This is a great week to enjoy the trails. They're in excellent condition, very little riders, and fresh snow nearly everyday.

We had riders go south to enjoy the Cranberry Trail (they headed out on trail 7 south, to 6) and then hit the Cranberry Trail around to Bear Lake, Blue Bear Trail. They said it was a fantastic ride. Really enjoyed their day. Grooming was excellent. Scenary just as good. They thought it was one of their favorite trails they've ridden.

It will be busy after Christmas on the trails. If you have time off and are looking for a room this weekend, we have had a cancellation opening up two rooms. You can park your sleds outside your room, enjoy a hot breakfast (included in room price) and be on the trail within a minute after jumping on that sled. (call 989-732-2703 or 989-732-4914 if you're interested in making a reservation).

Well it looks the trails did survive the rain and warm temps.... cold weather and snow in the forecast for the week, so it is time to get up north and hit the trails.....

Here is the latest report from Ray's Retreat - December 28, 2008....

What a difference a day makes! Unbelieveable... we lost alot of snow but we thank goodness for the record snowfall we have gotten this month. Still snow on the ground. Woke up to cold, frozen ground and snowing!

Riders are returning from their rides and reporting good conditions. One group rode over to Alba, and called their friends to say 'get up here'. The riding is good.

Blain just walked in from a day of riding with his boys. They rode East Jordan, and brought trail 4 thru Lakes of the North back here to the motel. Good. Only dirt seen was on the hill thru Chandler Hills.

Snow is in the forecast every day this week, along with the cold temps to keep it!

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 01/04

After everyone left today, and we had cleaned rooms and resting a bit. We had to get out on our sleds ourselves.. its been almost TWO weeks. It was the perfect time to get out Trails had been groomed, and there was barely anyone out. We rode trails 7 and 4. Both were absolutly great! and many times perfectly excellent. If you could have seen Mike flying, then you would know absolutely without a doubt those trails were in top shape.

If you're looking for good trail conditions now is the time to come out now that all the holiday riders have left to go home. This week will be great riding.

Enjoy being able to jump on the trail directly from your room. No exaggeration, from your room onto the trail in one minute! Can't get any easier than that when you stay at Ray's Retreat. You can also start your day on the trails with a hot breakfast included in your room price. Give us a call to make your reservation. 989-732-2703 or 989-732-4914

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 01/06

    105 miles of pure fun!

Gaylord - January 6, 2009We got out today and enjoyed a great ride. Gordy you should have stayed here in Northern Michigan thru the week. You missed the best.

We left this morning taking trail 4 (right off of 7, along Old 27). This entire ride including over the Mancelona Hills and just starting into the 'camper alley' was a snowmobilers dream. Not a bump. I can't believe how great this was, even up and down the hills.
Through Camper Alley there were a few ripples on the downsides of hills. Still a great ride through these woods.
    Powerlines were flat and white.

We continued all the way along trail 4 until it turns into Antrim County and is 4/76. At the very outer edge of the Lakes of the North in Antrim County there are a few 2-3 big rollers before it flattens out again and smooth sailing resumes.

Gaylord - January 6, 2009Along 131 it was rough, but it doesn't last long and you're crossing over to head into the Jordan Valley. I recommend anyone who is up riding these trails to make this trip. The Jordan Valley is a beautiful ride. We rode around it. While going thru you can always stop at the fish hatchery. They stay open and have warm restrooms, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

Trails 76, 766 were in good condition also.

When we came out of the Valley, then we stopped at The Green Lantern for lunch before heading for home.
To be exact we rode 105.5 miles, and out of that many miles there was maybe a total of 2 miles that was bumpy. All the rest was just pure winter fun!

We saw a few other riders, perhaps 15 the entire ride. If you are able to get up north during the week I recommend it! You will not be disappointed.

I'll be posting pictures from our ride on the blog late tonight. www.raysretreatcountryinn.com/blog

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 01/12

We enjoyed our ride today. We headed south out of the motel, on trail 7. Great riding. When we crossed over Old 27 at Frederick it got rough through the first stretch of woods. Once we crossed Wilcox Bridge road, on trail 47 it was excellent. Could not have been any better. The corners were icier in a few spots and I also tipped over more than once. The smooth ride continued into Lovells. We gassed up, and then continued on trail 47 heading back into Gaylord. It was not as smooth but still a very good ride. A few rolling bumps here and there, but overall a great ride.

Lunched at Mama Leones and then flew back on trail 7 to home. Trail 7 along the highway was excellent. Took a short detour back onto trail 4, and it was in great shape too.

A total of 77 miles and enjoyed it immensely.

Again, I repeat, the best riding is during the week.

Found this while surfing.... on the Ray's Retreat Blog... I guess folks are braving the cold after all....

BRRRRR.... HOPE YOU LIKE THE COLD

The day started out at 11 degrees, and by the time I returned home from work it was 3 degrees. Its now (at 7 pm) below zero. We show -3. We never got the brutal winds they had predicted, but it was still blowing thru the day. Only about 2-3 inches of new snow.

I am amazed at peoples determination to ride. Everyone of the 6 rooms went out riding today. Dave and Becky enjoyed the ride around Starvation Lake. We have a group of older riders in, three rooms. All in their late 60's, with the oldest one 70. They rode 153 miles yesterday. Today, with those cold temps they still rode 107 miles.....

    More from the blog here....

Riders continue to enjoy good trail conditions along with the frigid cold temps. The ride north to the bridge continues to be a beautiful ride all the way. Lovells and Starvation Lake, along with Jordan Valley are in great shape. Several rooms rode The Blue Bear and Cranberry stating it was an enjoyable ride.

2-4 inches of new snow is in the forecast for tomorrow. One more night and day of the fridge artic temps before things get more comfortable in the low 20s for the weekend.

THIS weekend is Houghton Lakes Tip Up Town, and the Snow Cross Races in Gaylord.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 01/19

Everyone's been coming in telling what good rides they've enjoyed. One older fella said its the best he's enjoyed in many years... even yesterday was good riding with all the weekend traffic.

We took a quick ride this evening on trail 7 north into Gaylord, then 774 out by the airport. We rode up to eat supper at Applebee's. When we came back home, the groomer had been thru and that is always such fun being the first on a groomed trail.

We got 8 - 10 inches of new snow over the weekend. There's plenty of snow for everyone to enjoy, and saw and heard many people getting stuck by getting off trail.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 01/21

Beautiful Day on the trails. Enjoyed an all day ride up to the bridge. Total of 155 miles (Bob's sled had 154 miles, my sled showed 156, so I took the middle!)..
Bob was our leader for our group of 6 that headed out this morning after breakfast heading north on trail 7. Great shape. Still don't like having to cross Main Street in Gaylord. Can't believe there hasn't been a sled/car accident there.

Some bouncing on the trail north of Gaylord to south of Wolverine. Not bad.

Mostly excellent trails thru out the day.

Burt Lake is huge when you're riding around it, 35 mph and stopping every few feet. This section is clearly labeled 35 mph, and no riding on this part of the trail from 12 am to 8 am so those home owners can enjoy thier beauty sleep.
I still enjoyed this section of ride. Gives you a chance to see the lake homes up close. One homeowner had their own little sign by the drive that read : Quiet Zone. Accelerate Slowly.
Duh? .............how can you accelerate fast when you're only accelerating to 35 mph???

Enjoyed lunch at Mackinac City, and then the ride along the Mighty Mac. She's always beautiful. Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter.

We took trail 7 north thru Indian River, Cheyboygan and then Mackinac City. From there we headed down through Pellston, Alanson, Wolverine, and back on trail 7 heading home.

The trail coming out of Alanson south was rough for a little bit.

Everyone enjoyed the ride through the woods past Weber Lake.

155 miles of great riding. This has been a great year on the trails anytime we've went out. Hope you'll get a chance to come north and enjoy them.

You can stay at Rays Retreat where you can enjoy a hot breakfast (included in room price) before starting your day on the trail while talking with other riders and finding the best rides. Jump on our sled and be on the trail in one minute. We are located directly on the trail. Cable tv, in room refrigerators, microwaves, wifi. All you need to enjoy your winter vacation.

    Gaylord - January 21, 2009 by you.

Gaylord - January 21, 2009 -- I love to ride! Yesterdays 155 mile ride to the bridge yesterday was a great day spent on the trails. We had a group of six of us that left the motel at 9:30. Bob led us all the way. Here it is the bridge in the winter. The Might Mac is beautiful any and every season.

Great riding continues here in the Gaylord area.

Yesterday was a mixed bag with trails getting rough later in the day, but then groomers were out and evening riders were pleased with their rides.

Today everyone has returned saying pretty much every mile of their ride was a real joy. We had one guy say that it was time to pack up all his riding gear/sled... it couldn't get any better so time to end on a perfect note.

It was a very busy day on the trails yesterday but groomers were out last night, and again tonight so they're in fine shape for the more peaceful weekday riding.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 01/27

    Excellent, Excellent!!!

Great riding for all of the 115 miles we rode today. We enjoyed Gaylord trails, Indian River, and Jordan Valley trails. They were all in excellent shape. No reason for anyone to complain. It was a fabulous day on the trails. Enjoyed every mile of it.

Gaylord - January 27, 2009We headed north on trail 7 up to Indian River where we caught 765 west thru Chandler Hills. This is the first time we have ever been through Chandler Hills (except for spring time when we're hunting for mushrooms). I've heard many people talk about their rides through the Hills so I was looking forward to riding somewhere I've never been.

What fun! I love the hills, the swooping valleys with trees lining you on either side. They were groomed perfectly too. I would not care to ride them on a weekend with alot of traffic because it is narrow with many curves.

From Chandler Hills we entered Jordan Valley and enjoyed this scenic ride for the second time this season. Even prettier today with the sunshine shining so bright.

Chandlers Hills thru Lakes of the North to home.

Only one small section - the very northern part of Lakes of the North had a short rough bumpy section.

I'll be posting pictures late tonight from todays ride on our blog: www.raysretreatcountryinn.com/blog

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 02/02

What could be more fun than being out on a snowmobile on a great winter trail? I just can't think of one thing I would rather be doing.

Another great day of riding. 90 miles, with only about 10-15 miles of riding with some bumps, dips and ripples. We headed south on trail 7 along Old 27. Sweet............freshly groomed, sweet smooth riding.

When we crossed over 27 down at Frederick, then trail 7 was a little rough. We soon came head to head with the groomer. This gets a bit tricky when its curvy, woody and high snowbanks. Its nice to have reverse. From then on trail 7 south to Grayling and south of Grayling was awesome. We started down the trail to Roscommon but turned around when we got to Four Mile Road it was all dry pavement over the interstate so we turned around and got back on the groomed trail. Then tried turning down to the Cranberry/Houghton Lake, but it was extremely bumpy. Went about 3 miles before turning around to get back on the groomed trail. Took it along to the Blue Bear. The first half of the Blue Bear was great. Ran into another groomer. The second half of the Blue Bear hadn't been groomed and had some good some bumps for a short distance.
Good riding from Lakes of the North to home.

Fun Day. Hope you'll get a chance to get up and enjoy these great trail conditions. Give us a call if you're looking for a place to stay. 989-732-4914

We grabbed this from Ray's Retreat Blog in Gaylord... thanks Mike and Ann...

Gaylord, February 10 -- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly -- todays ride

    http://www.raysretreatcountryinn.com/blog

Gaylord - February 10, 2009No problems keeping warm today. We (Mike, I and Terry) headed out this morning shortly after 9 am. Already 40 degrees. Cloudy ... Lots of snow through the woods trails.

We ran into a variety of trail conditions. We managed to get in 70 miles. Headed south on 7, along Old 27. Not bad, a little ripply. Then to 679, 79 and 76 ... heading around Starvation Lake, and then onto Lakes of the North where we stopped for lunch.

Any roads, two tracks were either bare, muddy, icy or watery. Lots of ice on the trail where its been in the sun.

Some water, not as much as any of us expected.
Couple muddy sections, but we were able to navigate around the worst of it.

Went through a stretch of pine trees with fog.... spooooky.

By noon the sun was out, and skies were cleared. I have to say it... it was a pretty spring like day!

We shed clothes and stuffed them in our seats. Mike was down to a t shirt, under his coat. I had taken my sweat shirt off... and was riding with my coat open. I had a long sleeve shirt under the sweatshirt.

    Visors up, light weight gloves.

It have been nice to have a picnic lunch.

Now, we're waiting and watching the skies. Right now I see a big beautiful full moon and stars. We're watching for the cold winds to come blowing in and bringing snow with it. Its in the forecast.

Just got back from riding the Gaylord trails Monday thru Wed. Monday we rode from Mancelona to Frederic to Lovells and back. Great trails!!! We tried the new trail that is not marked on most maps from Mancelona to the trail just about one mile north of Starvation Lake. Great Trail!!! This summer they might want to take out a few more trees on the sides though. Tuesday we left Mancelona and did the loop up to the Bridge and back. Plenty of snow!!! Even the roads thru Alanson were not too scraped. Remember to maintain the posted 35 mph for the stretch by Mullet Lake. We did pass a sheriff so they do patrol it!! Total miles Tuesday of 200. Great job groomers!! the trails were awesome . Now if we could get some of those county workers not to scrape the roads so much where the trails are. (I know some of them do it on purpose because there is spots were they only scrape down to the pavement and sand where the trail is) The rain Wednesday morning changed to snow as we were headed back home. Big storm coming Thursday!! Get up and ride there is a ton of snow up here!!!

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 12/27

We didn't get the big snow they were calling for last night, which is a disappointment. But, we didn't get the rain they got further south of us. Some freezing rain, and about an inch/two of snow.
Which means, Gaylord trails are in good riding shape. As are the surround trails. Riders enjoyed their riders north to Indian River, the Bridge, over to the Jordan Valley. Everyone said the trails were in good shape.
The time to ride without the traffic is during the week. Hope you'll get a chance to get up this week and enjoy northern Michigans great trails.

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 03/03

Just returned from a fantastic 97 mile ride on the trails. Excellent riding! We jumped on the trail right here in front of the motel (Trail 7) and headed north. Smooth sailing!

Unbelieveably smooth. The entire trail up to Indian River. That distance we only saw two other riders, and one of them was a DNR officer. Who did check our trail passes. (had to justify his great day of riding on the trails).

We then went west and enjoy more great riding on the Indian River trails that direction. Chandler Hills, Weber Lake... again it was all awesome conditions.

The day started out very cold and my face finally warmed up about an hour before returning. Morning started out at -10 here and warmed up to 20 at this time.

Mike enjoyed good riding yesterday when he did the Lovells route with Mark. Very few bumps down that way either.

    Great trails! Great conditions!

I think Mike and Ann Ray are the only snowmobilers on the Gaylord trails midweek..... here's another ride report...

    Gaylord Area Trail Report - Ray's Retreat - 03/05

We just got back from another great ride. Such fun! ... Its been cloudy all day, although it has warmed up. Still a great base on the trails especially through the wooded areas.
We headed out this morning 9 am. It was 32 degrees. Took a left out of the motel, on trail 7 (south). It had been groomed. Was that icing smooth. So pretty. That continued until we hit Crawford County, just south of Waters. There their county crews had decided to plow another lane in the old highway and thrown hugh chunks of hard frozen snow and ice all over the trail. This continued all the way to Frederick. Major boulder obstacles and dangerous! What a shame to ruin such a beautiful run of trail.
Then we headed to Lovells. Great trail riding all the way there. Lots of icy corners, so beware. From Lovells we went to Lewistown. Again, loved this ride. Great smooth trails. No problems. Just the one stretch over the little bridge (where they do not groom) that was rough, but their trails were awesome. When we stopped on the trail just in Lovells for a break, another rider stopped and said he had started that way and turned around because a group of riders told him it was mud and bad. He should not have listened to them. Don't know where they had been riding... but we never saw it.
Fun, Fun, Fun! Stopped for lunch in Lewistown and then onto Gaylord. More great riding.
As we were heading home, south of trail 7 it was wet as you came up to the crossroads, but trail still holding up. Won't take much sun or more warmth and this part of the trail will be the first to go. Still smooth sailing on home.
Good riding for the rest of today, should be able to get in a decent ride tomorrow even...and then it'll be wait and see if we get rain, freezing rain or snow. hmmmmm

Here is some info from the Hardcore Sledder Forum on the Gaylord Grooming situation:

SLEDCONTACT --- Let me set the record straight here! And I do know what's going on! I am the local contact for the club.

The "New Club" organized late this past summer. and are truely putting in hours of their own time to make this work. But remember these people all have other jobs and can't do it all. They needed to physically contact every landowner that the trail crosses and get a signed lease, Set up contracts for their equipment, Brush and sign 101 miles of trail, and put together the nessesary paperwork for their grant agreement. This only scratches the surface of what goes on.
Anyways, as the club was getting leases they protect the landowners with insurance and themselves for that matter. Last friday afternoon the Railroad Co. noticed that they had not recieved a insurance binder and said they would call the police for tresspassing if the club groomed.
I had to make a decission to not allow the club to groom due to NO insurance to the land owners. I'm sure this was an oversite on their part, and doesn't help the users of the trail but these guys are truely trying to make it work. The program is set up for reimbursements and not up-front money so they need to take this out of their pocket first and to my understanding didn't have that money to get it last week.
As you can see its not because they haven't been paid, Not equipment, Not because they didn't want too, They just couldn't put it together for this weekend and I am sure they will be up and running this week.

Planning a weekend in Feb to ride in the Gaylord area. There will be two of us. Does anyone have recommendations where to rent and where to stay? We would like machines that are 09 or 10 with reverse, hand warmers, and around 500 cc (give or take). Basically we would like machines that we can have a good time on without breaking the wallet or our backs. We rented from a place a few years ago in the Boyne area and one of the machines suspensions was clearly clapped out and we did not have a good time. They professed to have new, good equipment but when we got there they only had one new machine left and we were stuck with the old piece of crap. We would like to stay where we have access to the trails. Thanks in advance.
